New! Embattled Marriage Program Claims Tax Money Never Funded Religion

When the Northwest Marriage Institute was founded just three years ago, it was by its own account
"primarily dedicated to providing religious services,” such as Bible-based counseling to couples. But that
mission, the organization states in court documents filed last week, broadened with its decision to accept
government money, to include what is now its main offering – "an education program that promotes
healthy marriage from a secular perspective.” That is part of the Vancouver, Wash.-based Northwest
Marriage Institute's response to a lawsuit brought against it by Americans United for Separation of Church
and State, charging the marriage educator improperly used government funds to promote Christianity. In
what is likely the first lawsuit accusing a federally supported marriage program with a First Amendment
violation, Americans United claimed in its September lawsuit that Northwest Marriage's programs were
"saturated with a fundamentalist view of Christianity.” The lawsuit also targeted the U.S. Department of
Health and Human Services and the nonprofit Institute for Youth Development.
